Pizza ovens and oven accessories: step up your success!
If you want to increase your consistency in making pizza at home you need to invest in the right tools. Especially having some of the listed below kitchen tools can make a difference between an average pizza and an amazing pizza. And if I am asked where to start I would answer: start with a good pizza oven.
A dedicated pizza oven is a must-have especially in some of the Italian pizza styles. For example, there is no way to prepare an authentic Neapolitan pizza recipe without having a pizza oven that supports high temperature. As you all know, Neapolitan pizza is baked as average at 450C (788F). But this is true not only for Neapolitan pizza. Also the Roma style pizza is baked at temperatures that are not in the standard home oven range.
Therefore, investing in a good pizza oven will help you in your pizza making journey. Until the point where it makes a huge difference. I consider the oven as the most important accessory if you want to be serious in making a good pizza.
If a pizza oven is not what you want to invest on, then I still recommend to at least buy a pizza stone or a pizza steel. And with that you can’t miss some of the pizza oven accessories like a brush or a pizza peel.
Following is a list of what I consider the best pizza ovens and accessories when it comes to ratio between cost and benefits. If you follow me you know that I own a Ooni Koda 16 and I consider it to be one of the best pizza oven for Neapolitan style that you can buy today. Oven and food thermometers
Precision in pizza-making starts with temperature. A food thermometer isn’t just for checking if a pizza oven is at the right temperature; it’s your secret weapon from start to finish. For amateurs and pros alike, measuring temperatures during every step—like kneading the dough—is key to perfect pizzas every time.
When you’re kneading, knowing the dough temperature ensures you hit the sweet spot for a perfect proofing. A few degrees can make a big difference in the execution of a pizza recipe. The right temperature sets the stage for the dough to rise just right, creating all the fundamentals for a perfect crust.
But it’s not just about the dough. knowing the temperature of the pizza stone or pizza steel will help you in a better pizza baking. Let alone that for some ovens (like the Ooni Koda 16 or any other gas pizza oven) you really need to measure the stone temperature before you put a pizza in it!
For amateurs diving into the art of pizza-making, a thermometer takes the mystery out of perfecting your dough and achieving that ideal bake. And for professionals, it’s your tool for consistency, guaranteeing that every pizza meets your high standards.
From kneading to baking, a food thermometer is your guiding light. Get precise with your temperatures, and unlock the full potential of your pizzas. Make every pizza a masterpiece with the assurance that comes from knowing your temperatures are spot on. For this purpose you can buy two different thermometers. One is an infrared gun. Perfect for pizza stone and pizza steel. The second is a kitchen thermometer with a probe. This will help checking the pizza dough temperature at its core when kneading. If you want to buy only one of them I would go for the Infrared with priority.
InfraRed Thermometer
Measuring temperatures in kitchen is one of the most underestimated parts of cooking. Both pizza dough kneading and baking also require to take under control the temperature. The most versatile way to do so is using an IR temperature gun.
Ideally you want two thermometers: one infrared and one with a probe. The first to measure temperature of surfaces (included pizza stone) and the other for the dough. If two is too much, prioritize the IR.

Probe thermometer
A probe thermometer is excellent to measure the pizza dough temperature while kneading. So it’s a bit more specific and helps exclusively during the pizza kneading phase. But it is a good kitchen tools in general.
This is why in my opinion you should buy a kitchen probe thermometer that has a cable or is wireless. In this way you can use it for example in oven or BBQ for the meat. It is so much more flexible!

Pizza stones for oven
If you don’t want to buy a dedicated pizza oven then you have another option: a pizza steel or a pizza stone. They can help a lot in your pizza making journey. In fact thanks to them you can experiment with different authentic Italian pizza styles. I explained wuite in details what you can expect from them in a previous article. And I also offered a cheap alternative. But if you can, better to get one of those pizza accessories.
The market offers a lot of different pizza stones for home oven. In reality though we mainly have two stone types for pizza making: biscotto and cordierite. But the latter is the one you want to use in a home oven.
During the last years another baking surface started to become popular: the pizza steel. For certain point of view a steel is doing a better job than the stone. But it comes at a higher price. However, the steel should normally last you much longer than a stone and with less maintenance or care. So up to you to decide which one you want to work with. For ure they are a very good option for pizza in home oven or even pizza in BBQ.
I selected for you several options, to help you getting this pizza tool from your favorite shop.
Ooni pizza steel
The Ooni pizza steel is probably one of the most reliable and well made that you can find on the market. Although it is a bit more expensive than other options, it has a warranty of 25 years. Let alone Ooni brand is a warranty of quality.
Using a pizza steel will help you experimenting with several authentic Italian pizza styles. One of my favorite is for example the Pala alla romana!

What’s fantastic of a pizza stone is its versatility. In theory it is not just for pizzas, it’s ideal for baking bread also for example. Plus, it’s easy to use—simply preheat the stone, assemble your pizza, and slide it on. Voila!
With a pizza stone, you’re not just making pizza; you’re elevating your homemade pizza game. You should definitely try a pizza stone, it’s not exapensive.
